Exploring the Silvan Reservoir Park and Stonyford Creek Trail
On July 14, I spent some time at the Silvan Reservoir Park, 65 km east of Melbourne, exploring the interesting Stonyford Creek Nature Trail.
In 1914, a severe drought in Melbourne prompted the search for extra water storage for the City of Melbourne. Construction of the reservoir began in 1927 and it was completed in 1932.
The former open outlet channel system was taken out of service some years ago and replaced with large underground pipes, and some sections of the old stillage ponds and aqueducts remain as historical features.
The information board near the observation area contains large size reproductions of photos taken during the reservoir's construction.
