The Panton Hill area, 30 km NE of Melbourne, has a rich heritage of gold mining activity, which thrived in the period 1850 until the 1940s.
I went there on November 8, 2006, and explored the region in the Long Gully, Wimbi Reserve, Boomer's Reserve, Wurran Reserve, and Yanggai Reserve, with these areas of preserved bushland now managed by Parks Victoria.
They surround the Long Gully, New Chum, Chinaman's Gully and Boomer's Creeks.
The principal walking track, 2 km return, is in the Wimbi Reserve, passing through interesting bushland, with views down to Boomer's Creek. It starts at the junction of Long Gully and Bakehouse Roads.
There are no formed walking tracks in the Long Gully Reserve, and there are many old diggings to explore in the bush.
