The Warrandyte State Park, 25 km NE of Melbourne, is a gold fossicker's delight.
Gold was discovered there in 1851, and there are many relics, old mineshafts, mullock heaps, and tunnels in the area.
There is of course no commercial mine operating, the last one was closed down in the 1940s.
Many people undertake panning as a hobby in the area along Anderson's Creek, and occasionally discover some delights!
The many old mine tracks offer interesting hiking - most have been converted into official signposted wallking trails.
On February 2 and 3, 2007, I followed some of the trails: the Wildcat, Wildcat Link Link, Dead End, and Fiddler Gully tracks. This was about 6 km in total, starting at Gold Memorial Rd.
