The Donelan Track is in the Lysterfield State Park, 40 km east of Melbourne. It is a Heritage Track, leading to the remains of the former Donelan Homestead, high up (218m) on one of the tallest hills in the Park.
The Homestead was built in 1878, by the Donelan Family, who managed a large razing/dairy/cattle property of 100 hectares.
The Track is named after the family, and passes through the original estate, now heavily forested and revegitated.
The Homestead was demolished in 1960 when the State Government closed down all farms in the region, which became part of the catchment area for the Lysterfield Reservoir. The Reservoir was decommissioned in 1975, and the region became part of the Lysterfield State Park.
All that remains of the Homestead are the crumbling foundations, the old dam, and shrubs which have gone wild.
I visited the Homestead site on May 2, 2007, on a 6 km circuit walk throughh the forest.
