The Retarding Basin off Liverpool Rd, in the Boronia-Bayswater district, 35 km east of Melbourne, is managed by Melbourne Water, primarily as a water retention and flood mitigation facility.
Located near the western boundary of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, it is open to the public, with well-maintained tracks shared with walkers and dogs, and contains two linked lakes, surrounded by extensive open grassy areas.
The Dandenong Creek, which originates high up in the Dandenong Ranges, enters the Basin.
There are nice views across farmland to the Doongalla Forest and the Ranges.
The Basin is a habitat for a variety of waterfowl, frogs, platypuses and other fauna.
I visited the Basin on July 20 2007, and enjoyed the interesting 2 km circuit walk around the lakes and through remnant forest.
