Butterfield Nature Conservation Reserve, Emerald

The Butterfield Nature Conservation Reserve is a large area of protected forest, next to the Woori Yallock Creek, on the Emerald-Monbulk Rd, 45 km east of Melbourne.

It is the habitat of many species of birds, animals, and fauna.

A 2 km Nature Trail runs through the reserve.

Immediately opposite the entrance gate is the Emerald Diggings Picnic Ground, and an access point to the Dandenong Ranges Tourist Track.

Gold was discovered in this area in the 1850s.

Many of the walking tracks in this section of the hills follow the original trails which were constructed in the 1850s for excursionists from Melbourne.
