The Olinda Forest, 40 km east of the Melbourne CBD, is in the Dandenong Ranges National Park.
It's a beautiful environment right throughout the year, with excellent walking tracks, creeks, gullies, lush vegetation, and tree ferns.
In early winter, the first of the colorful fungi start to appear.
One of the best shorter walks starts at the Eagles' Nest Picnic Ground, reached from the Silvan Rd, and follows the Eagles' Nest Rd, George's Rd, and Hermon's Track. This follows the Lyrebird Creek Gully, crossing the creek twice over bridges.
This is about 2 km, taking about 35 minutes. The Black Cockatoos provide entertainment in the canopy!
The gates to the Picnic Ground are locked at 4 pm in winter, 6 pm in summer.
