Winter Walk in the Doongalla Forest

The Doongalla Forest is 30 km east of the Melbourne CBD, in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, adjoining the outer suburb of Boronia.

Picnic areas are at the site of the former homestead and stables, and several good walking tracks radiate from there.

Some of these tracks are old narrow pony trails - others were once logging roads, now used for forest and fire management.

I visited the Forest on June 23, 2008, a cold overcast winter's day, and walked a 4 km circuit which took me along the muddy Stables, Bills, Edgars, and Golf Course tracks, crossing the Dandenong Creek twice.

Some early fungi had already appeared!

This Forest is one of my favourites!
