The Sugarloaf Reservoir Park, 35 km north east of Melbourne, is reached from the Eltham-Yarra Glen Road.
The Reservoir was opened in 1982. It is one of Melbourne's principal water supplies, and the environment is very picturesque, surrounded by the Christmas Hills. The main walking Track circumnavigates the Reservoir, passing through unusual forest, with eastern grey kangaroos nearby!
This loop Track is 18 km, and permits are required from the Ranger by anyone wishing to undertake the complete route.
I visited the Park on December 3, 2008. I completed the shorter "Chris Phillips" track, 5 km return, which goes to the base of nearby Mt. Graham, and starts at the main car park. It's a steep climb to the top of this mountain, following a rough track over native grasslands, through fern thickets. There are good views across the Reservoir from the Summi Track - views from the actual summit are partially obscured by tall timber.
The Summit is at 250 m - the base is at 196 m.
