Deptford State Forest - East Gippsland

The Deptford State Forest is a large area of native bushland, bordering the Mitchell River National Park, about 20 km north of Bairnsdale, some 350 km east of Melbourne. It's at the foothills of the Victorian Alps.

The Clifton Creek runs through the Forest, a tributory of the Mitchell River.

In the Forest, not far from the hamlet of Clifton Creek is Black's Camp, a former alluvial gold mining area. The remains of the old diggings are evident along the bank of the Creek.

A bridge of historical significance crosses the Creek at Black's Camp, adjacent to an old concrete weir.

I visited Black's Camp with my brother on September 6, 2009, exploring the old gold diggings and the (mainly dry!) Creek.

I have also included some images of the Victorian Alps, taken from the Prince's Highway, near Rosedale.
