Discovering Eagle Nest, Olinda Forest

Lyrebird Creek

Eagle Nest Track

Eagle Nest picnic ground is nestled deep in the Olinda Forest, Dandenong Ranges National Park, 35 km east of Melbourne town.

It was once a farm, in the 1940s, and is bordered by the scenic Lyrebird Creek.

The forest was logged in the 1870s to 1940s. The logs were carted to the rail head at the Mt Evelyn station by bullock wagons, then by motor transport about 1905.

It was once a farm, in the 1940s, and is bordered by the scenic Lyrebird Creek.

What we see today is mostly regrowth, as the forest was ravaged by bushfires many times up to the 1960s.

See all of the Photos of Eagle Nest of my visit!

Old stumps and logs remain, as a heritage of the logging era.

Eagle Nest is reached from the unsealed Silvan Rd, then along Eagle Nest Rd.

The gates are closed at 4 pm when Standard Time is in effect - 6 pm other times.

There are beautiful ferns along the creek valley.

I visited Eagle Nest on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, on a 2 km return hike along the Eagle Nest Track.

This is one of the best spots in the Olinda Forest!
