It uses part of theformer Mt Evelyn Aqueduct management track, which once cut the town of Mt Evelyn in two. The Aqueduct was de-commissioned on February 7, 1972, and the rural section of land through which it passes has been preserved as a linear park, part of the Mt Evelyn Forest.
The pictures were taken on February 21 2012, on a 5 km return hike along the rural section of the Track, showing the old aqueduct and adjacent forest.
That section of the aqueduct has not been filled in, and the remains of bridges to adjoining properties still exist.
This was a return visit, having explored the Trail previously in 2007.
Some of the bluestone walls have crumbled, and large trees have fallen across sections of the aqueduct.
I accessed the Trail at its eastern terminus at Hunter Rd, off the Monbulk Rd, and continued to where it crosses Priestly Crescent, at the point where the open Aqueduct diappearss undergound in pipes.
