Wombelano Falls - Kinglake National Park

I visited the scenic Wombelano Falls on July 31, 2012, in the Wombelano Block of the Kinglake National Park, 70 km NE of Melbourne.

Approximately 98 per cent of the park, including the office and most visitor facilities, were burnt by the Black Saturday bushfires in February 2009. Work is ongoing to rebuild major visitor sites. The Falls Track, car park, signage and viewing platform have been completely rebuilt, following their almost total destruction in the massive bushfires of February 2006 and again in February 2009.

The 2 km loop track winds its way past ferns and regrowth timber down the Valley to the viewing platform - the waterfall is actually Hirst's Creek, as it plunges almost perpendicularly about 50m down a rugged cliff face.

Best viewing is in the late morning, during the summer months - at other times, the sun is blocked.

Nearby is the Mt Robertson State Forest, popular with trail bikes and 4WD enthusiasts. This Forest adjoins the National Park, and extensive controlled logging is carried out in its plantations.

The Falls car park is reached from Exton's Rd, then Captain Creek Rd - the latter is a muddy narrow track!

The panoramas shown in the Photo Album were taken from the Frank Thomson Reserve, a picnic spot/lookout at the highest point on this section of the distict, on the Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd. The views are excellent, with the towers of Melbourne visible on the far horizon.

See the full set of Photos of my visit!

Thanks for the post. Is Captains Creek Road navigable with a 2WD after several dry days or does it need a 4WD to get through?
