The Beaconsfield Flora & Fauna Reserve is on the other side of
Cardinia Creek from Akoonah Park. There are two footbridges where the creek can be crossed.
The network of walking paths extends the entire length from Old Princes Highway to the roundabout at Inglis Rd/Payne Rd. Dusk and Dawn are your best bets for animal watching. An assortment of animals and birds can be observed. It is probably the closest place to Melbourne where both Monotremes (platypus & echidna) can be observed - the platypus have been re-established in the Upper Beaconsfield sections of Cardinia Creek.
The success of the
program has seen platypus as far down as the Reserves section of the
creek. Echidnas are also found in the Reserve as well as most parts of
the Beaconsfield region that is covered in bush.
