Bourchier’s Walking Track at the Yarra - Kangaroo Ground

These pix were taken on September 9, 2012, along the north bank of the Yarra River, in the municipality of Kangaroo Ground, 20 km east of central Melbourne.

They show the scenery, environment and views along Bourchier’s Walking Track, next to the Yarra, which is reached from the end of unsealed Bourchier’s Rd.

A canoe landing is at the start of the Track, which is also popular for fishing enthusiasts.

The 2 km return track skirts private property, offering excellent views across the Yarra rapids to the Warrandyte State Park and Stane Brae on the opposite bank.

Bourchier’s Rd leads off Menzies Rd.

The end of the track is reached at a vantage point, marked by a sign “Warning - beware of the Angus Bull” at a fence crossing!

Exploring Birrarrung Park

Situated at the confluence of the Plenty and Yarra Rivers, about 10 km from central Melbourne, this 33 hectare park was an important meeting place for the Wurundjeri people.

Birrarrung Park is a significant recreation space within the parks along the Yarra River, incorporating two large ephemeral wetlands.

There is a large lagoon, inhabited by many ducks and other water birds!

Several wood barbecues (wood is provided), picnic tables and shelters are available in the park. Fires are permitted only in the barbecues provided, and small gas barbecues are allowed.

An adventure playground is available for children. There are 2.8 km of flat sealed trails, suitable for skating, cycling and walking.

Pedestrian and cyclist access is available at all times.

Vehicle entry is available from Templestowe Road, Bulleen (Melway 32 H4). Car park gates are open 6am to 6pm, extending to 9pm during daylight savings. 24-hour car parking is available Dogs are permitted in the park but must remain on a leash at all times.

Merricks-Red Trail - Eastern Sector, Mornington Peninsula

The Merricks-Red Hill Trail links the towns of Merricks and Red Hill, in the Mornington Peninsula, 90 km south of Melbourne.

It's a 5 km walk/equestrian trail, following the alignment of the dismantled Merricks to Red Hill railway.

The railway operated from 1921 to 1953, and ran from Bittern to Red Hill, with stations at Balnarring and Merricks.

The western sector between Merricks and Red Hill was converted into a shared trail in 1954 by Hastings Council -the remainder was integrated into private property.

Nothing remains of the railway infrastructure - long gone.

The Trail passes through large pines, which appeared to have been planted in the 1920s.

I did the eastern section of the Trail on December 9, 2007, starting and finishing at Merricks, on a humid and overcast day.

There is little maintenance done on the Trail, which is rough and stony in parts.

It passes through green vineyards, with views towards Westernport Bay.

Merricks Beach Walk

This scenic Coastal is 6 km return, starting at the Merricks Beach, on Westernport Bay, 65 km south of Melbourne.

It is actually along the beach, to Point Leo, and return.

It is best done at low tide when the rock pools can be explored!

It forms a sector of the long Beachwalk extending from Somers (in the east), to Flinders (in the west)

I did this walk on January 10, 2007.
