Mullum Mullum Trail

These pix were taken on June 13 2012.

They show the environment, fauna, and flora along the Mullum Mullum Trail, in the municipality of Templestowe, about 20 km east of central Melbourne.

My 5 km (return) hike started at the western end of the Trail, at the junction of the Main Yarra Trail, reached from Webster's Rd, passing through Tikalara Park, the Domain Wetlands, Deep Creek Reserve, to the Warrandyte-Heidelberg Rd at the Manna Gum play centre.

The Mullum Mullum Creek is followed for much of the journey, along recently constructed bridges, passing a Lagoon, the home of many resident ducks!

The lagoon is adjacent to the junction of the Parkway and Sanctuary Place, and has an interesting Aboriginal Heritage information board, barbecue/picnic area, and shelter.

The Mullum Mullum Trail may be followed south for several kms between the Warrandyte-Heidelberg Rd until its terminus at Tindals Rd, Donvale.

The Pound Bend Reserve and Tunnel, Warrandyte State Park

These pictures were taken on February 15 2012 in the Pound Bend Reserve, Warrandyte State Park, 15 km from central Melbourne.

They show the Yarra River, walking tracks, and the world-famous Pound Bend Tunnel.
The Evelyn Tunnel Mining Company, a public company, was formed on 8 February 1870.

The object was to create a tunnel through the narrow section where the Yarra River turns back on itself and divert the river through it. This left five kilometres of river bed which could be mined for alluvial gold.

The returns approximated the costs involved, the company never paid a dividend and was wound up in September 1872.

Montford's Beach - Mornington Peninsula National park

Montford's Beach is in the Mornington Peninsula National park, 90 km south of Melbourne.

Access is from a small car park at the end of St John's Wood Rd, Tootgarook, then via a foot-track from the Lifesaver Track.

The coastal scenery is spectacular, facing Bass Strait, with rocky cliffs, vast expanses of rock-pools at low tide, a lookout, and a long sandy beach.

I visited this Beach on November 6, 2007, doing a 4 km circuit hike, a wild, sunny, and windy day!
