On July I went up to the Kinglake National Park, and did the infamous Mt. Everard Track.
I started at the northern entry point at the Kinglake-Hurstbridge Rd, and is an 8 km return walk, ultimately reaching the summit at 475 m. The first sector climbs steeply around Mt. Beggary.
The Murrindindi Shire has recently placed an interesting information board at the summit, describing the Everard region. The peak was formerly known as Mt. Misery. There were beautiful pink wildflowers along the track, which passed through extensive populations of grass trees.
Most of the walk is along a ridge, with tantalizing views across the rugged valleys on either side. Unfortunately, there is no vantage point giving unobstructed views due to tall trees.
On another day I will do the alternative approach, from Steels Creek Picnic Ground in the south, along Bundy's Track.
