On July 21, 2006, I went out to the Warburton area, 85 km east of Melbourne, and did the 9 km (return) Yarra River Trail.This starts at the bridge at the east end of Warburton, and a large sector of it follows the alignment of the early 3 ft gauge timber tramway which once ran from the mills in the Starling Gap area, through Big Pat's Creek, to the broad-gauge railhead at Warburton.
The narrow gauge line had closed down in the 1940s.
The Trail passes through lush forest and ferns next to the Yarra for about half of the journey, then crosses the Wood's Point Rd, and the follows the road to the junction with Big Pat's Creek Rd.
The return journey is along the Riverside Drive, on the south side of the river, through tall timber and passing farms. There are nice views to the east towards Starling Gap, and closer to Warburton, Mt. Victoria is the dominant peak, easily recognised by the radio communications towers on the summit.
