On Tuesday July 4, I hiked through an interesting Forest - the One Tree Hill Reserve, in the Christmas Hills, 50 km NE of Melbourne.
This is a very scenic protected forest, managed by Parks Vic, and was once a thriving gold-mining area.
The main walking Track starts at the signposted northern access point, at a small car-park off One Tree Hill Rd. After going through the gate, the Track wound its way past the actual summit (345 metres), passing very unusual trees, then a steep downhill sector of about 2 km. There were views through the trees towards the west (Melbourne), and eastwards (to the Yarra Ranges). The best views were on the flat section, near the summit.
The Track ends at another gate, the continuation of O'Shea's Rd. The Forest adjoins private property,and passes a large area fenced off by local authorities for "experimental vegetation" purposes.
I wasn't able to find any gold, but there were many old shafts!
