O'Shannassy Aqueduct Walk - Part 1
Picture at top left shows construction of the Aqueduct in 1928, taken at approximately the same place as my own picture in 2006!
On July 9, 2006, I did about 4 km (the southern part of the Cement Creek to Warburton sector) of the adjacent maintenance track of the above-ground section of the disused O'Shannassy Aqueduct , on the lower slopes of Mt. Victoria, in the Yarra Ranges National Park, 100 km east of Melbourne.
The 78 km Aqueduct was built in 1928, consisting of open and underground (piped) sections. The infrastructure still exists, but the open sections are heavily overgrown in parts by encroaching forest. The adjacent gated maintenance road, known as "Road 18", is now used by Melbourne Water and local authorities as a management and fire access route and walking access is permitted, but not encouraged.
The track passes through magnificent tall timber and superb fern forests.
Road 18 is accessed from a turn-off on the Mt Donna Buang Rd.
I will do the northern sector of the Track later, starting at Cement Creek.
