Nayook West was a thriving timber logging settlement about 10 km east of Powelltown, 70 km east of Melbourne, near what is now the Powelltown-Noojee Rd.
In the 1920s, its population was 150, with a shopping centre and a Saturday night picture theatre.
It was completely destroyed in the disastrous 1939 bushfires.
Nothing remains now, except a sawdust heap, almost buried in dense vegetation, at the site of the former mill, on the La Trobe River.
The site is reached by a signed walking track which starts at the junction of the Powelltown-Noojee Rd and Big Creek Rd.
This track is part of the long "Walk into History" track which starts at Powelltown, and ending at Big Pat's Creek, 35 km to the north, following the old timber tramway routes.
After passing the Nayook West site, about five minutes from the Powelltown-Noojee Rd, the track continues through the forest for about 3 km to the High Lead Car Park.
I explored this Track on February 25 2008, completing about 4 km (return), passing through nice forest and fern gullies.
Some artifacts remained after the 1939 fires, but were lost in the major fires of 1983.
