The La Trobe River Rainforest is a beautiful area within the Yarra State Forest, 80 km east of Melbourne, near the Powelltown-Noojee Rd.
Up to the 1940s, it was a logging region, with many timber tramways used for transporting the logs to the mills.
Sadly, the forest was devastated in the terrible bushfires of 1939 and 1983, and few artifacts remain.
The forest we now enjoy is mainly regrowth.
Many of the former tramways have been converted into walking tracks - the 35 km "Walk into History" links Powelltown with Big Pat's Creek.
I hiked a 4 km (return) section of the Walk into History track on February 27, 2008, as part of my objective of completing the entire track - I have now done about 15 km of it!
This Section, along a former tramway route, was from the High Lead car park, Noojee Rd, to a point near the Big River Basin Rd.
This sector of the Track crosses the La Trobe River several times, over slippery logs. Take care!
Unfortunately, the track has become almost impassable near the Basin Rd end, as it leads into thick jungle and a swamp.
A few km to the east of the High Lead car park is the La Trobe River Picnic/Camping ground, which I visited, reached from the Ada River Rd. This is in the heart of the rainforest, with an interesting, well-maintained track leading down to the river through tree ferns.
