The Ascent of Mt Cole, Western Victoria

Mt Cole is in the southern section of the Mt Cole State Park, 180 km west of Melbourne.

The Summit is reached by driving up Ditchfields Rd from the main Mt Cole Rd, to a car park at the gate on Frees Point Rd.

From there, the Mt Cole Track is reached after a walk up Frees Point Rd.

The Track is a circuit, of about 1.8 km, with the highest point 886 m. A signpost marks the start of the loop on Frees Pt Rd.

The summit is actually a flat volcanic cone, covered with forest and large boulders - the track does not reach the summit but passes around it about 20 m lower down.

The views from Frees Pt Rd and the Mt Cole Track towards the east and north are superb.

We did this summit hike on March 3, 2008.
