Ferntree Gully Circuit Hike - Nature Trail

On Sunday afternoon August 16, 2009, I went over to the Ferntree Gully Section of the Dandenong Range National Park.

From the main picnic ground, I hiked a 3.5 km signed circuit, following Rambler's Track, Musk Avenue, Telegraph Track, and Acacia Trail.

The first 1.5 km section is known as the "Nature Trail".

This passes through magnificent tall regrowth forest and fern gullies, initially next to the Ferntree Gully Creek.

Parts of this circuit are quite steep, with an increase in altitude from 200 m to 370 m.

The entrance to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk ("The 1000 Steps") is nearby.

The main Picnic Ground is at the site of Dobson's Timber Camp, which was set up in 1854. Dobson's Gully was the original popular name of the area, later changed to Lightwood Gully, which then became Ferntree Gully.

The Ferntree Gully National Park was proclaimed in 1927, and became part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park in 1987.

See all of my Photos of the trip, which include some historical images, dating back to the 1860s, for comparison with 2009!
