The Warrandyte State Park, 25 km east of thee Melbourne CBD, is particularly appealing during late winter.
The colorful blooms of early wildflowers and golden wattle are glorious along the Yarra river.
The views over the Park from Mt Lofty are magnificent, with marvellous panoramas across the Yarra Valley to the Yarra Ranges and Mt. Dandenong.
I visited the Park on Monday afternoon August 17, 2009, on a 6 km circuit hike, starting at Witton's Reserve, at the canoe launching ramp at the end of Reserve Rd. This took me up Wayne Track, steep at first, then along the ridge to Stephen Track, and to the Mt Lofty Summit. Right at the summit there is a picnic table!
Continuing along Stephen Track, I took the descent down the firebreak, reaching a picnic table on the river bank.
From there, I followed the river trail back to the car park. I had brief chats with some other walkers on the track, doing what I was doing in the reverse direction.
