South Beach - Somers - Coastal Hike

I visited the South Beach, Somers, on Westernport Bay, 70 km south of Melbourne, on Tuesday September 1, 2009, the first day of spring!

I entered the beach from the cliff top at the end of South Sea Rd, descending through interesting coastal forest. I then followed the coastline east towards Sandy Point for about 2 km, then returned.

Along this section of the coast there are the remains of many old trees - the shoreline has changed over the past 100 years and these trees were once on dry land!

There were good views towards Phillip Island - the tide was out, exposing the vast rock pools.

Further to the east, the boundary fence of HMAS Cerberus RAN Naval Establishment is reached, beyond which entry is prohibited.
