Flinders Coast Blow Hole in early Winter

These pix were taken on June 6, 2012, on a visit to the Flinders Coast Blowhole, 90 km south of Melbourne.

The weather was bitterly cold, with an icy wind coming straight in from the South Pole!

London Bridge coast - Portsea

These pictures were taken on Sunday afternoon, January 29 2012.

London Bridge is a well-known rock formation at the extreme easterly tip of the Mornington Peninsula National Park, about 2 km from the town of Portsea, 90 km south of Melbourne.

The Bridge is reached by following the Portsea Ocean Beach Rd, then continuing to the Bridge car park.

A pathway follows the cliff-top, yielding excellent views of the Bridge formation.

Another track descends to the Beach, and from there it is a 350 m hike along the sand to the Bridge itself.

A pleasant 2 km walking path, known as the Farnsworth Track, passing along the tops of the sand dunes, links the London Bridge carpark and the Portsea Ocean Beach.

There is an excellent Lookout on this Track, not to be missed!

After exploring the Bridge, I hiked along the beach to the Portsea carpark,a total distance of about 3 km.

The fuzziness in some photos along the beach was due to a heavy heat haze which had come in from the ocean!

The Spectacular Blowhole, Flinders Coast

I visited the spectacular Blowhole on the Flinders Coast on January 27, 2012.

It's 90 km by road south of Melbourne, and is reached from the turnoff on the Flinders to Rosebud Rd, about 1 km west of Flinders township.

Access to the beach is via a 500 m stairway.

The views are truly spectacular!

The Fish-and-Chips at the Flinders Cafe is always good value!

Bridgewater Bay, Mornington Peninsula National Park

These pix were taken on January 21, 2012 at Bridgewater Bay, Mornington Peninsula National Park, 80 km south of Melbourne.

They show the magnificent coastal scenery on the 2 km circuit track, starting at the small car park at the end of St. John's Wood Rd (Blairgowrie).

The signed track is mostly on sand, and a staircase of about 100 steps leads down to the Beach. There are some hilly sections, and seats at various vantage points.

Beware of the huge March flies which like to eat humans!

Part of the track follows the Lifesaver Track, which forms part of the long Peninsula Coastal Walk.

Balnarring Beach - Kitesurfing and Boats

Balranning Beach is about 70 km SE of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

It's popular for sheltered swimming, small boats, sailing, kitesurfing, beachwalking and low-tide reef exploring.

Kitesurfing is a surface water sport that uses wind power to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard).

I visited the Beach on March 22, 2009, a very windy day, with kitesurfers and small boats active.

I walked about 6 km (return) along the beach to Somers Beach, with a side trip into the adjacent extensive Coolart Wetlands Sanctuary, Homestead and Lagoons.

Coolart is separated from the Beach by the scenic Merricks Creek, reached by an interesting suspension bridge.

The region was first settled in the 1830s, and Coolert has a rich history.

The original inhabitants of Coolart were the Bunurong tribe of Aborigines and it is from the word "Colourt" or "Callert" - their name for nearby Sandy Point - that the present name of Coolart is derived.

In 1895, Frederick Sheppard Grimwade bought the estate and built the imposing homestead as the family's country retreat. Between 1907 and 1937 Coolart was held at different times by Thomas Armstrong, James Balmain and John Sylvester Feehan. The late Tom Luxton purchased the property in 1937 and immediately had the property declared a sanctuary for native wildlife and embarked upon a program of habitat development. The 87 hectare nucleus of the Coolart area was purchased by the Victorian State Government in 1977 and it was proclaimed as a reserve for "Conservation and Education Purposes".

Balnarring Beach - Coastal Walk

Balnarring Beach is located on the northern section of Westernport Bay, about 60 km SW of Melbourne.

At low tide, a magnificent reef is exposed, with crabs and fishes galore!

The wide sandy beach is a 2 km strip, extending past the Coolart Wetlands. It is not a surf beach!

Its calm waters are excellent for swimming, paddling, snorkelling, canoes, kayaks, yachts, and catamarans.

I visited this excellent beach on March 11, 2009, and walked the 4 km (return) route westerly along the sand towards Pt Leo and back.

There were fine views across Westernport Bay towards Phillip Island.

Merricks Beach - Westernport Bay

Merricks is a small settlement on Westernport Bay, about 70 south of Melbourne.

I visited Merricks on February 1, 2009, and did a 4 beachwalk north to Balnarring and back.

The tide was out, and the reef was exposed, with many water fowls waiting for fish!

Other beachwalkers, some with hounds, and a few swimmers, were enjoying themselves!

Please see the complete set of
Photos of this trip, which includes an historical image taken around the year 1940, showing the beach, looking south to Merricks.

Exploring Cape Schanck - Mornington Peninsula NP

The Cape Schanck section of the Mornington Peninsula National Park, 100 km SE of Melbourne, is a popular destination for walkers, photographers, and other visitors, about 90 mins drive from the CBD.

Two good walking tracks start at the main car park (parking fee applies!) - these are the Boardwalk, and the Bushranger's Bay Track.

The Boardwalk descends for about 1 km along a wooden staircase, reaching sea level at the southernmost tip of the Cape. View points along the staircase offer marvellous panoramas of the rugged coastal scnery.

Pulpit Rock is nearby.

The Bushranger's Bay Walking Track goes easterly, 5.4 km to the Boneo Rd, not far from Flinders township. A side track leads to the beautiful Bushranger's Bay beach.

A third walking track starts just outside of the main car park, leading to the Gunnamatta Surf Beach, about 7 km to the north-west. A side track leads to Fingal Beach. Passing through bushland and along cliff tops, it can also be accessed from the Fingal Picnic Ground, about 1 km north of the Cape Schanck car park.

I visited Cape Schanck on January 21, 2009 - see the full set of Photos which show the lighthouse, the suberb coastal scenery, and the 2 km (return) boardwalk.

Bushrangers Bay, Flinders Coast

Bushrangers Bay is in the Mornington Peninsula National Park, 90 km SW of Melbourne.

The 6 km (return) walking track (accessed from Boneo Road, near Cape Schank), is regarded by many visitors as the best scenic short coastal walk in Victoria.

I would certainly agree!

The Track is officially known as "Two Bays Track" and terminates at the Cape Schank Lighthouse.

The turnoff to Bushrangers Bay is about half way to the Lighthouse.

The sheltered beach is magnificent, some young people were enjoying the waves!

I visited Bushrangers Bay on October 29, 2008 - see the full set of
