Exploring the Olinda Creek and Stewart's Weir

These pix were taken on October 21 2012 in the Olinda Forest, 35 km east of central Melbourne.

They show the environment, scenery and features along a section of the Olinda Creek, on a 2 km hike along Management Track 19, which starts at Olinda Creek Rd.

Decades ago, the Olinda Creek was diverted near the old farmhouse, leading to Stewart's Weir and Emergency Pumping Station on Olinda Creek Rd. The diversion runs through a brick-walled channel - the old creekline can be seen nearby.

Olinda Creek Wetlands - Lilydale

The Olinda Creek Wetland adjoins the Lilydale Lake Park, 35 km east of Melbourne.

Shared walking/cycling tracks circle the retaining ponds, connecting the Olinda Creek to the Park and the main retarding basin.

Access is via Hull Road.

The ponds provide a superb habitat for waterfowl and other creatures.

Nearby is the attractive Lakeview Reserve.

I visited these interesting Wetlands on March 8, 2012, for a 3 km hike.

Exploring the Olinda Creek Diversion

These pix were taken on March 5, 2012, in the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

They show the scenery and environment in an obscure area of bushland surrounding the Olinda Creek, adjacent to the Olinda Forest, 35 km east of central Melbourne.

My 3 km hike followed Management Road 19, from the gate on the Olinda Creek Rd. This road crosses the Olinda Creek, then leads to an old orchard and derelict house, taken over by Parks Victoria many years ago.

A rudimentary foot-track leads off Management Road 19, following the creek, then over a small wooden bridge into a large paddock.

A tributory to the creek is adjacent to the paddock, which flows frm a spring high up on the Olinda Escarpment.

Next to the Creek are the ruins of an old farmouse and outbuildings - at the end of the paddock is an old house, unoccupied - by coincidence I met the owners, who were inspecting the unfenced paddock.

A rough track crosses the tributory, leading into the forest.

Decades ago, the Olinda Creek was diverted near the old farmhouse, leading to Stewart's Weir and Emergency Pumping Station on Olinda Creek Rd. The diversion runs through a brick-walled channel - the old creekline can be seen nearby.

Circuit Hike in the Silvan Forest

These pix were taken on February 19, 2012, in the semi-tropical Silvan Forest, 40 km east of central Melbourne.

They show the scenery and and environment on a 2 km circuit hike, starting at the Overflow Car Park, opposite the SIlvan Reservoir main gates.

This took me along the Olinda Creek Track, then on to Circuit Track.

This part of the forest had been subject to intensive fuel reduction burning some months ago, but the ferns have
sprouted since then!

Exploring the Olinda Creek Region - a new track discovered!

These pix were taken on October 13, 2011, in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, 40 km east of Melbourne.

They show the scenery, fauna, and environment on a 4 km hike in the Olinda Creek Region.

My route started at the gate on Management Road 11, on the Olinda Creek Rd. I followed this Road, crossing the Olinda Creek, passing the derelict farmhouse owned by Parks Vic, then up the steep hill at the back of the former orchard.

This was a 130 m change in altitude.

Returning to the bottom, I took a side track north into the forest, crossing a quaint, rustic, footbridge over the Creek, then continuing on to a different creek, which does not appear to have a name! At this creek, which joined the Olinda Creek nearby, the track continued over a further crossing (boards) which I didn't explore and will keep that until a later exepdition!

Next to the creek, some enterprising souls had set up a picnic area, with a wooden table, seats, and an old gas-operated barbecue. This was next to a modern small water tank, which I believe may be used for fire control purposes.

Near the little bridge, a secondary track went westerly, adjacent to the no-name creek, in a large cleared paddock.

Decades ago, the Olinda Creek was diverted near the old farmhouse, leading to Stewart's Weir and Emergency Pumping Station on Olinda Creek Rd. The diversion runs through a brck-walled channel - the old creekline can be seen nearby.

Olinda Forest Hike - first day of Autumn- March 1 2011

Photos taken on March 1, 2011, the first day of Autumn, in the Olinda Forest, Dandenong Ranges National Park, 40 km east of central Melhourne.

The scenery is on a 3 km return hike,  starting at the junction of unsealed Stonyford Rd and gated Management Rd 18, following the course of the fast-flowing Olinda Creek.

This took me into Management Rd 13, then to the old bridge over the Creek.

This is one of the best shorter hikes in this section of the Park!
