Rye to White Cliffs Beachwalk

These photos show the scenery, views, and environment on a beach hike from Rye to White Cliffs, 70 km south of Melbourne, on October 9. 2010.

Starting at the main carpark adjacent to the pier, the hike was westerly along the beach, reaching the wooden staircase at White Cliffs, then up to the Lookout.

A trig point marker is next to the Lookout.

From there, it was a descent down to White Cliffs Beach with its boat sheds, then back via the path at the base of the cliffs.

There were excellent views from the Lookout - an old Limeburner's Kiln is nearby.

Distance was about 3 km total, on a warmish day of 19 degrees.

Rye Ocean Beach

The Rye Ocean Beach is about 80 km south of Melbourne, in the Mornington Peninsula National Park.

I visited this magnficent beach on Sunday afternoon February 21, 2010.

From the main car park off Sandy Pt Rd, I followed the Peninsula Coastal Trail for about 3 km along the beach towards Gunnamatta Beach.

This Trail extends for 26 km from London Bridge in the west, to Cape Schank in the east.

The coastal views are spectacular!

A large Sea Serpent came out of the ocean, causing swimmers to flee to the beach!

I have walked the entire 26 km Trail - 52 km return. It may be accessed at numerous locations along its length.

Rye Beachwalk

Situated on the popular holiday destination of Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula and nestled between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie is the coastal town of Rye.

Rye's main beach, fronting Port Phillip Bay, offers safe sandy beaches, a jetty, and attractive foreshore facilities. From 2001 to 2007, the foreshore was the venue of an annual sand sculpting event which showcased the talents of artists as they carved figurines and landscapes out of tonnes of sand. Point Nepean Road separates the wide foreshore from Rye's main shopping strip.

Around a kilometre west of the Rye Jetty is an outcrop of land called White Cliffs. At the base of the cliffs is a reconstructed old Lime Burners Kiln - a reminder of the mid-1800s when the extraction of lime was the area's primary industry. Scenic views along the coast can be enjoyed from lookout above the kiln.

Rye Jetty is one of the longest in the region, dating back to the 1830s.

My visit was on February 26, 2009, on a 2 km exploration of the beach between Rye and Tootgarook, and the Jetty.
