Flinders Ocean Beach - Westernport Bay

These pix were taken on May 29 2012, on a 3 km beachhike along the Flinders Ocean Beach, 90 km south of Melbourne.

Check out the YouTube video (above!)

The weather was terrible - wild winds, rain from Westernport Bay, cold, and bleak. I got soaked!

Shoreham Beachwalk in early autumn

On Good Friday, April 10, 2009, I went down to the Shoreham Beach, about 70 km SE of Melbourne, on the Westernport Coast.

My visit was mainly a 4 km (return) beachwalk NE towards Pt Leo, which included an exploration of the large reef.

There was interesting boating action nearby - the views towards Phillip Island about 10 km distant were excellent, with the Nobbies clearly visible.

St Andrew's Coastal Beach - Mornington Peninsula National Park

On Saturday March 28 2009 I went down to the Mornington Peninsula National Park, about 90 km SE of Melbourne, and did a 4 km (return) coastal walk between St Andrew's and Rye Ocean Beaches.

St Andrew's Ocean Beach is reached from Trueman's Rd, turning off at Sandy Rd - there is a car park and information board at the start of the foot-track.

The views are superb, extending SE to the Cape Schank Lighthouse, and NW towards Portsea.

The rock formations along this stretch of beach are somewhat unique, and surfing is popular.

Shipping was observed a few kms out in the main channel, heading towards Port Phillip Heads after passing Cape Schanck.

Lang Lang Coastal Walk - Westernport Marine National Park

Lang Lang is a small country town with a population of over 1,000, located 90 km South East of Melbourne, along the South Gippsland Highway.

The district was first settled in 1839.

Nearby is the Lang Lang Foreshore, a 4 km strip of coastline on Westernport Bay, reached from the Highway along Jetty Lane.

At low tide, an immense mudflats area is exposed, the habitat of many waterbirds and sea creatures.

These mudflats are an important feature of the amazing ecology of the Bay, part of the Westernport Marine National Park.

The Foreshore area is a camping area. Nearby are rows of quaint little boatsheds and small permanent caravans and cabins next to the beach. Part of this area is classified as a Heritage Overlay, specified as "typical of a 1950s style coastal resort". The land is owned by the Crown, and private individuals take out licences for the sheds.

No alterations of any kind may be made to the sheds or other structures without Council approval.

Erosion is a continuing problem, and various trials have been made in attempts to limit the effects. This included the placement of a tall wooden poles on the beach near the boatsheds, and old tyres on posts (at the extreme north of the beach).

There is a stone seawall, information boards, and a boat ramp.

The mangrove population has disappeared, and new plantings have not been successful.

The old jetty was demolished in 2007.

The Foreshore Committee of Management carries out maintenance and upkeep, supported by Government grants, revenue from camping fees, with the assistance of DSE, the local Council, and Parks Victoria.

My visit to this interesting beach was on March 20, 2009, where I did a 6 km coastal walk (return). This took me north to near the mouth of the Lang Lang River, and south to Red Bluff.

The tide was out - there were good views across the Bay towards the French Island National Park and north towards Tooradin.

Flinders Coast - West Head Beachwalk

The coastal settlement of Flinders is about 90 km SE of Melbourne, and dates back to the 1830s.

On the western edge of the village is an outstanding and long-established golf course which sits atop the cliffs overlooking Bass Strait.

Near the entrance to the Golf Gourse is the the West Head Lookout, which offers grand views across Bass Strait, Westernport Bay, the Back Beach, Mushroom Reef, and the ocean coast towards Cape Schanck.

A walking track/stairway descends from the Lookout to Back Beach.

At the western end of Back Beach is the start of the Ocean Beach, adjacent to the Mushroom Reef Marine Sanctuary.

When the tide is out it is possible to see how the rocks form a T-shape which is thought to be a partial modification of a natural feature realised by the local Aborigines in order to aid their fishing activities.

Yellow triangular markers designate the boundaries of the Reef.

My visit was on Tuesday March 3, 2009, on a 4 km (return) beachwalk from the West Head Lookout along the Back Beach and Coastal Beach.

Rye Beachwalk

Situated on the popular holiday destination of Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula and nestled between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie is the coastal town of Rye.

Rye's main beach, fronting Port Phillip Bay, offers safe sandy beaches, a jetty, and attractive foreshore facilities. From 2001 to 2007, the foreshore was the venue of an annual sand sculpting event which showcased the talents of artists as they carved figurines and landscapes out of tonnes of sand. Point Nepean Road separates the wide foreshore from Rye's main shopping strip.

Around a kilometre west of the Rye Jetty is an outcrop of land called White Cliffs. At the base of the cliffs is a reconstructed old Lime Burners Kiln - a reminder of the mid-1800s when the extraction of lime was the area's primary industry. Scenic views along the coast can be enjoyed from lookout above the kiln.

Rye Jetty is one of the longest in the region, dating back to the 1830s.

My visit was on February 26, 2009, on a 2 km exploration of the beach between Rye and Tootgarook, and the Jetty.

Exploring the Shoreham Reefs, Westernport Coast

The vast Shoreham Reefs, Westernport Coast, are exposed at low tide, and extend from Shoreham Beach southerly to a point near the town of Flinders.

They are popular with beachwalkers!

Shorteham is a small community on Westernport Bay, about 80 km south of Melbourne, and is reached from the Westernport Highway, through Hastings, then on the Frankston-Flinders Rd.

I visited the Reefs on February 19, 2009, completing a 6 km (return) coastal walk.

Point Leo Coastal Walk

Point Leo is a small settlement on Westernport Bay, about 70 km south of Melbourne. It has an excellent surf beach, and extensive reefs are exposed at low tide.

I visited Pt Leo on Monday February 9, 2009, doing a 5 km (return) beachwalk from the car-park.

As it was a weekday, and temperature was down to about 19 degrees, there wasn't much activity there, apart from a school group trying out their cricketing skills on the beach!

I passed an echidna, a resident of the nearby bushland, on the access track to the beach on the sand dunes!

Merricks Beach - Westernport Bay

Merricks is a small settlement on Westernport Bay, about 70 south of Melbourne.

I visited Merricks on February 1, 2009, and did a 4 beachwalk north to Balnarring and back.

The tide was out, and the reef was exposed, with many water fowls waiting for fish!

Other beachwalkers, some with hounds, and a few swimmers, were enjoying themselves!

Please see the complete set of
Photos of this trip, which includes an historical image taken around the year 1940, showing the beach, looking south to Merricks.

Beachwalk - Shoreham to Point Leo

Shoreham is a peaceful coastal settlement about 100 km south of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

On January 30,2009, I visited Shoreham, at low tide, and undertook a 4 km (return) Beachwalk to Pt Leo.

This was during a ferocious heatwave, with the shade temperature reaching 45 degrees - the temperature on the beach was a more comfortable 33 degrees!

Flinders Coastline - Westernport Bay

Flinders is a village about 70 km south of Melbourne, located on Westernport Bay.

With a population of around 510, Flinders is one of the smaller towns in Australia, and is at an altitude of about 39m above sea level.

I visited Flinders on January 13, 2009, and did a 4 km (return) beachwalk north towards the settlement of Shoreham.

The Photos show the coastline, the pier, small boats, and people having a good time in and out of the ocean!

This was very hot day, 37 degrees.
