Point Leo to Shoreham coastal hike - Westernport Bay

These pix were taken on February 14, 2012.

They show the coastal environment on a 4 km (return) beach hike from Point Leo to Honeysuckle Point at low tide.

Plenty of action from school groups learning to surf!

Pt Leo is 80 km south of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

Honeysuckle Point - Shoreham Coast

These pix were taken on January 16, 2012, on a 4 km return beachwalk along the Shoreham Coast, 8 km south of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

The tide was out a long way, exposing beautiful rock pools and serene lagoons.

My hike started at the main car park, then along the beach to Honeysuckle Point and the magnificent reef.

I first visited Shoreham Beach on January 16 1952, exactly 60 years ago, when I attended a ten-day camp organized by the YMCA at Camp Buxton.

I have included a photo taken on that day, showing members of my family and my tent mates - I am at the left in a blue and yellow striped T-shirt and runners! This is a tinted photo which I created from the original scanned 620 size black and white print.

Shoreham Beach coastal hike, early Summer

 

These pix  were taken, on December 22, 2011.

They show the coastline, at low tide, on a 4 km return hike from Shoreham Beach, 80 km south of Melbourne, towards the town of Flinders.

Coastal hike to Honeysuckle Point, Shoreham

These pictures were taken on Tuesday afternoon July 27, 2010, on a beach hike on the Shoreham Coast, Westernport Bay, 70 km SE of Melbourne.

My hike started at the foreshore carpark, over Stony Creek on to Honeysuckle Point, then return, and an extension to the west head.

There was interesting surf running, with several body-surfers enjoying the action, some doing the new stand-up "paddle surfing"!

See all of the Photos of my visit, which includes an historical image dated to 1940, showing the jetty, which was dismantled in the early 1950s. This jetty was used by boats which picked up produce from the nearby farms, and for supplying them with fresh supplies. It was also used by fishing boats, which would unload their catches on to waiting trucks, destined for the railway at Balnarring, or to Melbourne.

The hike distance was about 4 km.

Honeysuckle Point, Shoreham Coast

Honeysuckle Point is on the Westernport Coast, between Shoreham and Point Leo Beaches, about 70 km south of Melbourner.

I visited this excellent place on Monday February 8, 2010, a very hot day.

My visit coincided with an extremely low tide, with amazing rock pools and reefs extending out to around 500 m.

From the main car park at Shoreham, I hiked to Honeysuckle Point, then on to the outer reefs and return - ahout 4 km total.

Shoreham Beachwalk in early autumn

On Good Friday, April 10, 2009, I went down to the Shoreham Beach, about 70 km SE of Melbourne, on the Westernport Coast.

My visit was mainly a 4 km (return) beachwalk NE towards Pt Leo, which included an exploration of the large reef.

There was interesting boating action nearby - the views towards Phillip Island about 10 km distant were excellent, with the Nobbies clearly visible.

Exploring the Shoreham Reefs, Westernport Coast

The vast Shoreham Reefs, Westernport Coast, are exposed at low tide, and extend from Shoreham Beach southerly to a point near the town of Flinders.

They are popular with beachwalkers!

Shorteham is a small community on Westernport Bay, about 80 km south of Melbourne, and is reached from the Westernport Highway, through Hastings, then on the Frankston-Flinders Rd.

I visited the Reefs on February 19, 2009, completing a 6 km (return) coastal walk.

Beachwalk - Shoreham to Point Leo

Shoreham is a peaceful coastal settlement about 100 km south of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

On January 30,2009, I visited Shoreham, at low tide, and undertook a 4 km (return) Beachwalk to Pt Leo.

This was during a ferocious heatwave, with the shade temperature reaching 45 degrees - the temperature on the beach was a more comfortable 33 degrees!

Shoreham Coast Walk - Westernport Bay

Shoreham is a quiet hamlet on the north coast of Westernport Bay, 70 km south of Melbourne.

The beach is very good, and at low tide, a vast reef and rock pools are exposed.

I visited this nice beach on January 5, 2009, at low tide, exploring the rock pools and reef, on a 4 km return walk to a point about half way to the town of Flinders.

Exploring Shoreham Beach

Shoreham is a peaceful coastal settlement about 100 km south of Melbourne, on Westernport Bay.

On September 21, 2008, I visited Shoreham, at high tide, exploring the beach, foreshore and creek.

Surfers were everywhere!

Please see my Photo Album, which includes a picture of myself taken in January 1951, when I attended the YMCA Camp for Boys at Shoreham. The camp site was subsequently sold for rural residential development, and traces of it are still visible along the access road to the Beach.
