The West Track is in the Montrose Forest, Dandenong Ranges National Park, 35 km east of Melbourne, linking Brown's Track with Swansea Rd.
It's a fire management track, closed to public vehicles, and shared with walkers, horses, and cyclists, passing through regenerating forest.
The Track is steep, with a change in altitude from 162m to 241m at the summit.
The Forest was heavily logged last century, and has been burnt by bushfires on several occasions in the past 50 years.
I hiked this 2 km return track on July 16, 2007.
