On June 17 2008 I did a 4 km early-winter hike in the Mt Evelyn Forest of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, 30 km east of the Melbourne CBD.
This beautiful forest was the latest to be added to the Park, in 1997.
Several steep walking tracks lead easterly from the main Mt Dandenong Ridge down to the Silvan Creek firebreak.
My hike started at the big concrete water tank at the end of Mountain View Rd, reached from the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, and I followed the gated Wallaby and Richardson's Tracks.
This section of the Forest looks somewhat stark, due to recent fuel reduction activity.
Pretty pink winter wildflowers were seen along the Tracks. Fungi are still hibernating, and usually appear in copious numbers in July.
The views from Richardson's Track across the Yarra Valley are superb, extending from Mt Victoria in the east, then to Mt Donna Buang, Ben Cairn, Mt Toolbewong, Mt Monda, Mt Tanglefoot, Mt St Leonard and the Kinglake Plateau in the west.
The Warramate Hills, Blue Mountain, and Paul's Range complement the broad panorama.
These tracks become very muddy and slippery after wet weather and care is needed.
