Fairfield Pipe Bridge - Main Yarra Trail

Pix taken on Good Friday, April 6, 2012.

The Fairfield Pipe Bridge, crossing the Yarra, is about 4 km east of Melbourne's CBD, located just south of the Fairfield Boat House.

It was built in 1878 to carry water from the Yan Yean Reservoir to Kew.

The bridge was washed away in the bad floods of 1934. A new pipe bridge was built close to the site of the original bridge. The original pylons were later demolished and no signs remain of the first pipe bridge.

My visit was a 3 km (return) hike, starting at the Wurundjeri Lookout high up on the Yarra Boulevard, then down the Main Yarra Trail, across the Bridge, to the Boathouse.

My visit included exploration of some tracks in the bushland adjacent to the river.

There were glorious views from the Lookout across Yarra Bend Park towards the City!

See the complete set of Photos of my visit and my YouTube video!
